A round red clay pongal pot (pongal panai) with a matching clay lid. It is about 22 cm wide and 22 cm tall, holds about 2.5 litres and weighs about 1.64 kg. Use it to boil milk and cook sakkarai pongal, ven pongal and rice for Thai Pongal, house warming, temple offerings and puja, on a firewood stove, brick hearth or gas stove on low to medium flame. It can also be used for everyday rice, khichdi and porridge. Before first use, soak the pot and lid in water for a few hours, dry them, then season by boiling rice water in the pot. Avoid sudden temperature changes, and wash with warm water and a soft scrubber without soap. Natural clay colour and finish vary slightly from piece to piece.
